Here's Why You Should Find Your Essence

written by Tamika Burgess

“I believe that each of us has an essence, a quality at the very core of our being that makes us who we are. It’s what sets us apart from everyone else.  And I believe that finding ways to express that essence is one of the greatest joys in life.” – Oprah for “O” Magazine, 2012

I didn’t always know what my essence/passion was. The desire to figure it out never came until I graduated college and started working at an advertising agency. I knew the job wasn't for me from the outset, but I took it because I needed the money.

My job did not feed me in any way other than physically; I didn’t grow or learn anything while I was there. I was so unfulfilled that I dreaded going to the office. While there, I would go through the motions of doing the required mundane duties and still manage to advance. With that, my paycheck continued to increase, but as we all know, money does not buy happiness.

I was so frustrated with my situation that it started taking a toll on my attitude. I knew it was time for a change but had no idea what I should be doing. My only hope was prayer. I prayed for years that the Lord would reveal my passion to me.

And finally, it came to me five years into my six years at this job. As I sat on my couch watching TV one night, out of nowhere the phrase “I want to be a writer” popped into my head. At that moment, I knew I was at the starting line of a new path: my path. It was then that I started making changes. Within that year, I started blogging, took writing classes, and quit my job. I left the security of a steady paycheck and benefits behind to follow and express my essence through writing. To this day, I have never regretted the decision I made because I am happy.

I now understand that there was nothing wrong with my advertising job; it just wasn’t for me. I was unfulfilled and unfed because it wasn’t my passion.

Do What Feeds Your Soul

If you are doing something that no longer feeds you and doesn’t contribute to your growth, it’s time to move on. Take some time to sit down and think about what you enjoy doing, and pray.

Once you know what your essence is, take the necessary steps to start expressing it. But be warned, going forth and following your dreams is never easy. The hardest part will be taking that first step out of your comfort zone.

Having the courage to change your life will come at a hefty cost, literally and figuratively, but it will be so worth it in the end. Sometimes, you don’t have to wait until the end; once you actively start working towards or expressing it, you’ll notice a difference in yourself and your life.

Take a moment to consider how you can start expressing your essence, your true self, in your daily life. Whether through a career change, a creative pursuit, or a new hobby, remember that the journey to happiness begins with taking that first step. So, what will you do to nourish your soul and live authentically?
